Pennyrile District Basic Early Response Team Training

posted on March 28

On Saturday, May 4, from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, The KY Annual Conference will offer the Basic Early Response Team (ERT) Training for people who attend United Methodist Churches in the Pennyrile & Owensboro Districts with those who attend UMC’s in other districts of the KY Conference invited as they are willing and able to make the drive. The Basic ERT Training Class will be held at Hopkinsville First United Methodist Church in Hopkinsville, KY (1305 S. Main St, 42240). Because the training has changed to some degree, this training should be attended by those persons who have never had an ERT Training and those persons who are seeking recertification. The training will be led by Mr. Bill Carr from the Memphis Conference of the UMC. The contact person at First UMC for registration is Rev. Will Campbell, Associate Pastor (will@hopfumc.org; 270.886.0277).

What are Early Response Teams (ERT) and ERT Training?

Early Response Teams and ERT Training are the result of a collaborative effort of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and United Methodist Volunteers In Mission (UMVIM).

When disaster strikes, the local church usually provides the first response. This basic understanding—that disaster response is local—helps form a foundation for UMCOR’s national training and response. UMCOR equips Methodists to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters, supporting conference and church ministries on disaster response so that they can be the hands and feet of Christ in a hurting world.

Early Response Teams (ERTs) fill a specific need in the early days after a disaster to clean out flood-damaged homes, remove debris, place tarps on homes, and otherwise help prevent further damage, while providing a caring Christian presence.

ERTs are not a first-response group of emergency workers, nor are they recovery, rebuild, or repair teams. Under very specific guidelines, ERTs assist survivors, without causing further harm or being a burden to the affected community. ERTs require an invitation to travel to another district, conference, or jurisdiction.

Okay. Please tell me more about the Basic ERT Training on May 4?

Basic ERT Member Training (8 hrs.) Cost: $10 per person
Saturday, May 4, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM [Hopkinsville First UMC]

This training is for ERT-Trained Members whose badges have expired and persons who have had no previous training. Participants will learn the basics of disaster response, including how to stabilize and secure homes safely, and how to work effectively with survivors and others on the response team. This standardized class is required for the basic ERT UMCOR identification badge. A passed background check and Safe Sanctuaries Training are also required for this course. Individuals will not be credentialed until they have successfully completed safe sanctuary training and a background check. The trainees will not get the background check link until the day of the class. This ensures that UMCOR doesn't part for background checks for people who don't attend the class. There is no cost to the registrant for the check. Their information is secure and we will receive basic “pass/no pass” information from the service without any of the registrant’s personal information. If a person has completed Safe Sanctuary training in the last two years, a letter or copy of the participant’s certificate will be sufficient. Please contact the pastor appointed to the church you attend for more information as to how you can complete KY Conference Safe Sanctuaries Training before May 4. The training is available online through the KY Conference website, but needs to be facilitated by an approved person. Lastly, the $10 fee for the course is payable by check or cash on the day of the course. The fee will help to cover the cost of a box lunch, drinks, and snacks during our time together.
